The Met Gala, that now regular fixture on the celebrity circuit, this week brought the good, the great and the truly awful to New York to celebrate the annual fashion exhibit at the Met Museum. This year’s theme was Punk: Chaos to Couture, and some of the celebrities in attendance took the theme a little far…or completely disregarded it. In my humble opinion, the night belonged to three women: Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift and Sienna Miller.

With her newly bleached shock hairdo, Anne Hathaway wore vintage Valentino and looked stunning. The black dress flirted with the Les Mis star’s wild side with sheer panels and a cheeky little flash of ‘side boob’.  The long sleeves finished in feathers – think old Hollywood glamour, or even Cruella Deville – adding even more of a punk feel. So Hathaway embraced the punk theme but didn’t go overboard. Cool.

Normally, I’m not a fan of Taylor Swift – music or fashion-wise, she looks far too old for her age and plays it too safe – but at the Met Gala everything changed. Again in black, the 23 year old had on the most beautiful J. Mendel dress. It blew me away. I actually had to check it was her. The dress was straight up and down with sheer cutout panels. Saucy!  But what caught my eye was the high, bejewelled collar; a great choice and with the simple pulled back hair, dark eyes and pale lips the singer looked punk-sational.

My ultimate favourite, though, was Brit Sienna Miller, who I love, with her wonderfully bohemian vibe. She could’ve looked plain or boring – if she had just worn the white Burberry gown by itself – but, of course, she didn’t. Being Sienna, she matched it with a heavily studded leather jacket, also by Burberry. Sid Vicious would’ve been proud. Her blonde tresses were left down and a bit grungy, but she crowned them with a gorgeous studded headband that totally enhanced her beauty.

Others that deserve a mention: Lana Del Rey – phenomenal in a bejewelled gown with a chiffon black floor-length cape; Kate Bosworth – in a stunning, short, shocking pink dress with intricate detailing; and the gorgeous Jennifer Lawrence, wearing a mid-length black 50s gown. OK, not very ‘punk’, but beautiful nonetheless.

Of course, we can’t have these wonderfully amazing looks without the bad, or this year, the downright dreadful. There were three who obviously didn’t check the mirror before jumping in the limo: Katie Holmes, Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashian. Looking at them, I’m screaming “WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?!”

But more of that tomorrow.
