The team at Byron Hairdressing may be more used to combing hair than climbing hills, but they still plan to brave Ben Nevis early this summer to raise money for local cancer charity Maggie’s Fife. The whole team is behind the campaign, hoping to raise more than £1,000 for Maggie’s centre in Kirkcaldy from sponsorship by local businesses, clients and others supporters.
The team is determined to make it all the way up to the 1,344m peak of Britain’s tallest mountain, and has already been meeting on alternate Sundays to train locally. Few of them have ever climbed a mountain before.
Over the past decade the team at Byron has held regular charity events and raised more than £20,000 for Maggie’s, which provides a unique and innovative programme of information and support to people living with cancer, their families and their friends. Late last year, they held a James Bond-themed day which was featured on STV morning news.
‘We’ve held charity days every year for the past 10 years, but we wanted to do something really special, and then one of my team suggested we climb Ben Nevis together,’ said Ronnie Marshall, owner of Byron, one of Kirkcaldy’s premier salons. ‘It’s an immense challenge, most of us are not hill walkers, but we thought it would be a great way to raise some more cash for Maggie’s.’
So far the team has done a walk from Kirkcaldy to Burntisland, up the Bin and then back again, and more recently they went up Lomond Hill. Other walks are planned. The climb up Nevis is expected to take between four and five hours.
‘We need to do lots of training, but with the winter being so mild, we’ve really enjoyed getting together on Sundays and stomping up those hills,’ added Ronnie.
The salon has set up a justgiving.com page to facilitate sponsorship, or those wishing to donate can visit the Byron Hairdressing salon and fill in a sponsor sheet. Byron is setting a target of £1,000, but everyone would be delighted to raise more.
